Landfill Environmental Monitoring

Comprehensive inspection and review monitoring of landfill sites — air, water, wastewater, noise, waste, sewage sludge, soil and land. One accredited partner, all media, complete documentation for the regulatory authority.

Comprehensive Landfill Environmental Monitoring

Landfill operators are required to carry out periodic environmental monitoring throughout the operational life of the facility, and for closed landfills for the period specified in the closure decision. The waste disposal regulation defines the scope and frequency of inspection monitoring and review monitoring, covering air, water, wastewater, noise, waste and leachate, sewage sludge, and soil and land. OIKOS performs measurements under PCA accreditation No. AB 934 (PN-EN ISO/IEC 17025) — across all required media in one programme.

Why OIKOS for Landfill Monitoring

Five reasons our landfill monitoring stands out — all media in one accredited laboratory:

Inspection & Review Monitoring — All Media, One Programme

OIKOS carries out the full environmental monitoring programme for landfills in both forms — as inspection monitoring (ongoing, required by permit) and review monitoring (assessment of the overall environmental impact of the facility). Under a single contract we carry out measurements and sample collection across all required media, laboratory analyses and preparation of reports for the competent authority.

As a laboratory holding both AB 934 and PT 010 accreditations, OIKOS offers a combination of competences unique in the region: certified analytical methods, demonstrated measurement proficiency and many years of experience in serving waste disposal facilities.

Operating since 1988, OIKOS has been carrying out landfill monitoring for over 35 years for municipal and industrial operators. More than two thirds of our 1,000+ clients return to us — for long-term monitoring programmes the strongest possible testimony of reliability. Part of the European viridiusLAB AG network.

FAQ

Landfill Monitoring Questions

The Minister of Environment regulation on waste disposal obliges landfill operators to carry out inspection monitoring and review monitoring. Inspection monitoring covers regular measurements and testing of specified media (groundwater, leachate, landfill gas, settlement, noise); review monitoring involves assessment of the overall environmental impact of the facility at specified intervals. The detailed scope may be further specified in the landfill operating permit.

The frequency of individual monitoring components is defined by the regulation and permit conditions. Typically: groundwater from piezometers — 2–4 times per year; noise — 1–2 times per year; landfill gas and leachate — more frequently depending on landfill type. Review monitoring is carried out less frequently — every few years. Please share your decision with us — we will prepare a detailed schedule.

Comprehensive landfill environmental monitoring covers: atmospheric air and landfill gas, groundwater (piezometers) and surface water, wastewater and leachate, noise, waste and sewage sludge, soil and land, as well as observations and measurements of landfill surface settlement. OIKOS carries out testing and measurements across all listed media under a single contract.

Yes. Landfills after closure are subject to post-operational monitoring for the period specified in the closure decision — typically a minimum of 30 years. OIKOS carries out post-operational monitoring on the same basis as operational monitoring, with the scope adapted to the requirements of the closure decision and the current state of the facility.
